ROCKFORD, IOWA — Funeral services for Irene M. (Baker) Sovereign, 86, formerly of Rockford, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Holy Name Catholic Church, Rockford, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

The family will greet friends from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Schumburg Funeral Home, with a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. parish prayer service.

Mrs. Sovereign passed away Tuesday (Feb. 24, 1998) at the Cresco Care Center, Cresco.

Irene was born in Cresco to Joseph and Barbara (Lickteig) Baker on Dec. 22, 1911. She attended and graduated from Assumption High School in 1931.

She married T. Clark Sovereign on Oct. 4, 1932, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco, with the Rev. J. P. Wagner officiating. From this union, there were two daughters, Virginia Tobin and Helen Tripp-Halverson.

The couple moved to Rockford in the 1940's when the Standard Oil Company transferred Clark to that area. She became a member of the Holy Name Parish and one of the circles. Irene was an avid gardener of both house and outdoor plants.

Clark died Dec. 25, 1989, and in 1990 Irene moved to the Cresco Care Center.

She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Tobin, of Charles City and her husband, Terry; a son-in-law, Roger Halverson, of Decorah; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four sisters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Helen Halverson; two brothers, Anthony and Rapheal Baker; two sisters, Eva Reburn; and Anna Grace Lentz; a granddaughter, Mary Ann Tobin; a grandson, Michael Tripp; and a great-grandson, Daniel Tobin.

Memorials may be directed to the Irene Sovereign memorial fund in care of Virginia Tobin, 102 15th Ave., Charles City, Iowa 50616-1507.
