Dorothy M. Vance, 78, of Charles City, died Sunday, August 22, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Dorothy Vance will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church. Pastor Margaret Hutchens will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Dorothy Mae Wheat Vance was born January 27, 1932, at New Hampton, the daughter of Elmer and Pearl (Metz) Wheat. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1950. Dorothy married Albert Huffman and they later divorced. On August 9, 1964, she was united in marriage to Alvin Vance. They lived in Charles City all of their lives. Dorothy worked at Spurgeons in Charles City for 32 years. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Women’s Fellowship and served as Financial Secretary of the church for many years. Other memberships included Charles City Women’s Club and Heritage Club. Dorothy enjoyed doing various types of needlework, reading, feeding the birds and sending newspaper clippings to family and friends about current events in Charles City. She was very family oriented and looked forward to sharing her life with them.

Living family members include her husband, Alvin Vance of Charles City; two children, Vickie (Chris) Sehy of Bozeman, Mont.; and Eugene Huffman of Fulton, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Nick and Kayla Huffman and Hawk Sehy; four brothers, Donald (Linda) Wheat of Sioux City, Duane (Jan) Wheat of Bremerton, Wash., Robert (Shirley) Wheat of Denver, Colo. and Kenneth Wheat of Charles City; and two sisters, Mary Hibner of Holiday, Fla. and Shirley (Glenn) Hauskins of Oregon City, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
