Geraldine “Gerry” Reed, 87, of Charles City, passed away Monday, July 26, 2010, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader, Iowa.

Funeral Services for Geraldine Reed will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert of Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue Saturday an hour prior to the service.

Geraldine Rebecca Taylor Reed was born November 20, 1922, at Emerson, Nebr., the daughter of Emil and Dorothy (Mayer) Taylor. She attended school at Bassett and Charles City. The eldest of eight children she was a nanny at the age of sixteen during the depression. On May 2, 1942, she was united in marriage to Robert E. “Bob” Reed. Since Bob was career Army it meant that the family traveled the world. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and YMCA. Gerry enjoyed fishing, playing cards with family and friends and discussing politics. During her life, Gerry was called upon to be a caretaker for various members of her family. For many summers Gerry cared for her granddaughter Lisa, while Lisa’s mother attended college. Lisa’s memories include checking out stacks of books from the library, many trips for ball games and various activities and going elderberry picking.

Living family members include four children, Marilyn (Gerald) Frye of Garnavillo, Jim (Kim) Reed of Lyman, Maine, Diane (Bob) Klaiber of Marstons Mills, Mass., and David (Connie) Reed of Tenino, Wash.; two granddaughters, Lisa (Jeff) Mink and Jennifer Reed; a great granddaughter, Allison Groom; three sisters, Thelma (Marvin) Kellogg of Charles City, Pauline (Elmer) Tupy of Charles City and Beverly (Duane) Kollman of Wabasha, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Bob Reed, on February 11, 2005; parents; two brothers, Jesse and Calvin Taylor; two sisters, Ruth Smith and Betty Brown; and a son-in-law, Jon Johnson.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee Street, Charles City, IA 50616 or the YMCA, 800 Hulin Street, Charles City, IA 50616.
