Ervin Herman Dieterich, oldest son of Carl J. and Bertha W. Kroneman Dieterich, was born May 19, 1906, in Rudd township, Floyd County, Iowa, one mile south of the Mitchell County line. He was baptized June 10, 1906 and received his early Christian education at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Township, for which Ervin's grandfather donated the land and helped build the church. Ervin attended elementary school at Rock No. 3 school.

At the age of 14, Ervin's family moved to St. Ansgar, Iowa, where he was confirmed on March 28, 1920 at Immanuel Lutheran church by the Rev. Paul Brammer.

As an adult, Ervin attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering and later was hired by P.G. and E. in Mason City, Iowa. Ervin also completed courses from the Minneapolis Business College.

He married Elaine Nelson on October 18, 1933 and in that same year became a member of First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. Ervin and Elaine farmed south of St. Ansgar for the past 60 years.

In addition to serving in several positions at First Lutheran, Ervin physically helped build the First Lutheran Parish Center; served on the advisory as well as the board of directors for the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar; served for 30 years as a director of the Carpenter Bank; served on the Board of Directors of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Group in Osage; and served for 11 years as an elected official--as a supervisor for Mitchell County.

Ervin passed away on Friday, May 28, 1993 in Rochester, Minnesota at the age of 87 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Elaine.

Ervin is survived by his daughter, Patricia and her husband, Richard Leonard of Minneapolis, and by three grandchildren, Michael, Susan and Jennifer; three brothers, Wilmer and Lawrence, both of St. Ansgar, Iowa, and Arnold of Marcell, Minnesota; one sister, Lola Kittleson of St. Ansgar; a sister-in-law, Violet Hunt of Everett, Washington.

Note: the Funeral was held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar--although the funeral was officially at First Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery, Osage, Iowa.
