Carl R. Elfers, 85, of Rockford, died on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services for Carl Elfers will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Rockford. Pastor Judy Wooton will officiate. Military Honors will be presented by the Walker-Graper American Legion Post #338. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Friends may call at First United Methodist Church in Rockford from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue an hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

Carl Roy Elfers was born September 9, 1924, at Floyd, the son of Morris C. and Clara B. (Seaton) Elfers. He graduated from Floyd Consolidated School in 1941. After high school he worked as a hired man for R.H. Schmidt. Carl served in the United States Army during World War II from August 19, 1944 to July 5, 1946. On March 30, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mildred Wefel at Clarksville. Carl farmed the family’s century farm west of Floyd until August of 1976, when they moved to Rockford. After moving to Rockford, Carl did carpentry repair for Floyd County Mutual Insurance from 1968 to 2005. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and 50 year member of card club. Carl served many years on the Rockford Library Board. His interests included carpentry, reading and gardening.

Living family members include his wife of 63 years, Mildred Elfers of Rockford; two children, Fran DeGroote of Rockford and Lynn (Jane) Elfers of Floyd; six grandchildren, Jamie (Andy) McCright of Rochester, Minn., Laura Elfers of Nora Springs, Jason DeGroote of San Diego, Calif., Lisa (Nick) Peterson of Nashua, Jessica (Andy) Dow of Rockford and Carrie Elfers of Charles City; five great grandchildren, Clara, Catherine and Lucas Dow, Michael McCright and Jena Peterson; and a sister, Ruby (Virgil) Munsell of Rockford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; great granddaughter, Marissa McCright; and a brother, Wayne Elfers.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, 21 3rd St. N.W. Rockford, IA 50468.
