Maxine Beverly Myers was born Dec. 6, 1933, in Rockford, Floyd County, Iowa, a daughter of Harold Edward and Mary (Halma) Myers and died Wednesday (June 9, 2010) at her home in Rockford. She received her education in Rockford graduating from Rockford High School in 1951.

She was united in marriage to Edward Ervin Burke on Jan. 20, 1951, in Caledonia, Minn. This union was blessed with seven children. She was a devoted mother who raised her children before returning to school, graduating as an LPN in 1979. She then had a 25-year career in nursing at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. Maxine was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Rockford.

She enjoyed gardening, the outdoors, playing cards, salmon fishing (but wouldn't eat the fish), bingo, knitting, crafts, handwork, the Minnesota Twins and the Iowa Hawkeyes. She loved caring for people, especially her family. Maxine recently experienced her first trip out East when she flew to Philadelphia for a granddaughters wedding. She saw the Liberty Bell for the first time and got to ride in her son's semi truck on her return trip to Iowa.

She was described by her children as a loving, supportive, compassionate, sacrificing, hard worker who was a good listener. She taught her children to be honest and encouraged them all to get an education. Some of Maxine's favorite sayings were: "It is what it is" and "Life goes on."

Living family members include her children: Marilou (Donald) Dormeier, of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Ervin (Jane) Burke, of Ottumwa; Michael (Mary) Burke, of Harlan; Ellen (Michael) Shea, of Hampton; Robert (Michelle) Burke,of Rochester, Minn.; Kristi Mason, of Rockford, Iowa; 13 grandchildren: Anne, Garry, Erin, Katie, Jill, Bridgette, Jodi, Jenna, Lindsay, Todd, Chelsea, Paul, and Rochelle; and six great-grandchildren.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Edward, son Steven, parents; and one brother Cecil Myers.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Maxine Burke Memorial Fund, First United Methodist Church, Rockford, Iowa.
