Mildred was born April 22, 1902, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Slice) Ginther, in Melbourne. When Mildred was 6, she moved with her family to Rockford. She attended Rockford Community School and graduated in the class of 1922.

She later moved to Mount Carroll, Ill., where she taught school for several years. Mildred was united in marriage to Heine Gross and the couple made their home in Savanna, Ill. Mr. Gross died in the early 1950s.

Mildred worked at the Rock Island Proving Grounds during the war. She was also employed as a desk clerk at the Savanna Hotel for several years until her retirement. Mildred moved back to Rockford in 1988 and resided in a mobile home on her nephew's farm west of Rockford. Tragedy struck Mildred's life when her home and all her possessions were lost to fire.

Following the fire, she moved into the Rockford Manor. She has been a resident of the Nora Springs Care Center for six years following a fall in which she broke her hip.

Mildred was a wonderful seamstress who enjoyed sewing even at the nursing home. Her family will always appreciate the crocheted afghans she made for them. She will always be remembered for the care and concern she had for her family.

Those thankful for having shared in Mildred's life include two nieces, Marilynne and her husband, Bill Gossett, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Jeanne and her husband, Bud Castle, of Waterloo; two nephews, Gary and Dennis Ginther of Rockford; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Heine; a half-sister, Cora; and three brothers, Eralsey, Wallace and Hoyle.
