John D. Shepley, 92, of Charles City, died Monday, May 17, 2010, at Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo.

A funeral Mass for John Shepley will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Reverend Brian Shepley will celebrate the Mass. Reverend Carl Ries and Monsignor Stanley Hayek will concelebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City with Military Honors by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday where the Knights of Columbus will lead the Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour before the Mass at the church on Friday.

John Donald Shepley was born in Bolan, Iowa, the third son born to John and Pearl (Cahill) Shepley on January 14, 1918. John was a graduate of the Immaculate Conception Academy Class of 1936. John had a strong work ethic. During World War II, he served his country in the United States Army, including duty overseas.

John worked for the United States Postal Service for 26 years. He retired in 1982. Before that, he worked for Zipse’s tending bar and managing their store/tavern. He was a salesman for Clark Candy. He worked for Salsbury Enterprises. John worked for many years at Ray’s Pasttime.

John married Eleanor Ewen on January 12, 1949, the fortieth anniversary of her parents, Andrew and Cecilia Ewen, at Immaculate Conception Church, Charles City. They were blessed with three children, Barbara, Brian and Thomas. John was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, and a 4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus. John loved going to auctions and rummage sales. He collected Aladdin lamps and coins. Having grown up during the depression, John enjoyed cutting coupons and finding a good bargain. John, along with his wife Eleanor, will be remembered for his generous hospitality and love of family and family gatherings. He was a loving, nurturing father and grandfather.

John is survived by his children, daughter Barbara (Leslie) Graham, Eyota, Minn., son Rev. Brian Shepley, Victor, son Thomas (Jennifer) Shepley, Chester, Va.; grandchildren, Erin (Lane) Johnson, Ramsey, Minn., Emily (Russell) Gehling, Eau Claire, Wis., Andrew Graham, Eyota, Minn., AnnaMarie Koehler-Shepley, Tampa, Fl, Audrey Shepley, Chester, Virginia, and one grandchild due in November; and four great grandchildren, Peyton Johnson, Spencer Gehling, Tyler Gehling, and Griffin Johnson; two brothers, Jack of Minn., and Gary of Nev., sister Daryls (Jack) Kielman, of Marble Rock; one cousin, Eugene Cahill of Knoxville; and sisters and brother in law, Irene Ferch, and Robert & Val Ewen of Charles City

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Pearl, his stepmother Vivian, his wife Eleanor on February 19, 2008, granddaughter, Melanie, and brothers Lawrence and Cleo.
