BIOGRAPHICAL NEWSPAPER ARTICLE FROM 1939--

Charles Cityan
102 years old

OAK PARK, ILLINOIS — William Gange, Iowa's oldest Civil war veteran, chuckled over a huge stack of greeting cards Saturday, happy that friends in his native Charles City and throughout Iowa had remembered his 102nd birthday.

He celebrated the event with "open house" for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. D. Evans.

There was a huge birthday cake with 102 candles.

Gange came to Oak Park to live with his daughter a year ago. He enjoys an automobile ride almost daily and follows "home town" events by avid reading of Iowa newspapers.

He was especially proud of a personal greeting from Gov. George Wilson of Iowa.
