Dies of Hurts in Collision of Car, Train

CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Mrs. Ruth Gerlach, 37, of Charles City, died in a hospital here last night of injuries suffered in a train-car collision Wednesday night.

Her husband, Emil, 47, and their daughter, Delores Pepper, 13, also injured in the accident, were reported still in critical condition Friday.

Their car, driven by Gerlach, collided with a Chicago-bound Milwaukee road train at a crossing here. The train struck the Gerlach car broadside.

Delores had recovered consciousness Friday. Mr. Gerlach has six to eight fractured ribs.

Funeral services for Mrs. Gerlach will be at 2 p.m. on Monday at St. John's Lutheran church, Rev. Walter M. Fritschel officiating.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

NOTES: Her maiden name was Shave. She had previously been married to Leo Pepper. See Leo's obituary in this collection. Delores later married a Mr. Gillespie.
