Ardith V. Ochs, 92, of Charles City, died Sunday evening, March 28, 2010, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

The Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Ardith Veronica Hagarty was born April 16, 1917, in Butler County, the daughter of Anthony and Edna (Addison) Hagarty. She graduated from the Floyd High School and later moved to Charles City. On December 27, 1937, Ardith married Joseph Anthony Ochs. The Reverend Thomas Rooney married them in the Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. Ardith was an accomplished mother and homemaker. In addition to helping with all aspects of farm work, the meals she served to threshers and haymakers were highlights for the visiting workers.

Ardith loved children and cared for dozens of youngsters during her life on the farm. She was an excellent gardener and took pride in the quality and quantity of her canned fruits and vegetables. Ardith was an active participant in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church activities. For 40 years, she tirelessly did all the weekly church laundry and ironing. Ardith was a staunch believer in a good education. She supported and encouraged her sons throughout their school years, and inspired them to be great public speakers, delighting them for years with the story of her winning high school speech contest. Her dramatic presentation of the story of “Jane Ann” was so poignantly delivered that the judges failed to realize that she had left out one whole page of the tale!

Living family members include her two sons, Dr. Donovan (Joan) Ochs of Solon and Dr. Melvin (Ginger) Ochs of National City, California; eight grandchildren, Cindi Ochs, Dr. Michelle (Bill) Kinney, Dan (Karen) Ochs, Melanie (Larry) Ochs Tokarski, Jody (Bobby) Blackwell, Christopher Ochs, Jennifer (Joseph) Melarango and Jessika Ochs; nine great grandchildren, Madeline, Ben and Elizabeth Kinney, Camryn and Alex Ochs, Elizabeth and Thomas Tokarski and Ravyn and Jaryd Blackwell; four sisters, Leone (Ed) Bukhardt, Eileen Burkhardt and Rita Rivers all of Charles City and Kathleen Lambert of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers; and three sisters.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to Iowa Hospice, 18 East Main St. New Hampton, IA 50659.
