Arlene Constance (Haugen) Ausen was born June 10, 1925, in Winnebago County, the daughter of Alfred and Clara (Hanson) Haugen. She received her education and graduated from Lake Mills High School. She furthered her education attending Waldorf College and earning her teachers' certificate. Arlene taught school in Winnebago County and Grafton. She also worked at the statistical laboratory at Iowa State University in Ames. On Aug. 11, 1946, Arlene was united in marriage to Leslie J. Ausen in rural Lake Mills at the Winnebago Church.
Arlene was active throughout her life in Zion Lutheran Church, PEO, Women's Club and the Legion Auxiliary. She had been a mother and homemaker most all of her life. Arlene enjoyed sewing, crafts, walking and reading. She baked fantastic brownies and prepared terrific fried chicken, the wings being her favorite pieces. However, her greatest joys in life were her husband, children and grandchildren. The family fondly recalls her incredible strength and selflessness of putting other's needs before her own. Arlene had an uncanny knack for getting what she wanted accomplished by convincing you that it was your decision all the while.
Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Arlene's life are her loving and devoted husband of 63 years, Leslie J. Ausen of Osage; her four children, Kathy Ausen of Winston-Salem, N.C., Julie (Kevin) Roske of Hillsdale, Wis., John (Karen) Ausen of Urbandale and Jane (Daryl) Larson of Nora Springs; six grandchildren, Nicol (Marcus) Jones, Danielle Ausen, Nathaniel (Elizabeth) Roske, Joshua Roske and his fiancee, Tanya Kringle, Eric Larson, Laura Larson and her fiancé, Aaron Cunningham, and two great-grandchildren, Makenna and Korbin Roske.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Helen (Eugene) Haberkamp.
