William R. "Bill" Mathis

BOWDINHAM, MAINE - William R. "Bill" Mathis, 79, of Bowdinham, Maine, and formerly of Charles City, Iowa, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 1996) at Kennebeck Medical Center, Augusta, Maine, of cardio-respiratory arrest.

Memorial funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 1996, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 807 S. Main St., Charles City, with the Rev. Eldon Jandebeur officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, is in charge of the arrangements.

Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the American Legion Shannon Wilson Post 174.

William Raymond "Bill" Mathis was born July 15, 1916, in Faribault, Minn., the son of Friederich and Caroline (Hoffeld) Mathis.

On Feb. 26, 1939, in Morristown, Minn., he married Kathrine Irene Quigley. Mr. Mathis joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served as a corpsman at the Naval Hospital in Farragut, Idaho. Following his return to Iowa after the war, the couple made their home in Charles City in 1944. Mr. Mathis became the manager of Gambles Department Store in Charles City. He then took a position with First Security Bank of Charles City. He remained at the bank for 33 years, retiring as a vice president of the bank.

Mrs. Mathis died on Jan. 2, 1995, in Mason City. Mr. Mathis moved to Maine to make his home with his son.

Mr. Mathis was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Charles City. He was a member of North Iowa Bankers Association. He had served as a member of the Charles City School Board. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 202 of Topsham, Maine. This year marked Mr. Mathis' 50th year as a member of the American Legion. In his spare time, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He often enjoyed going to watch the games of the Charles City Comettes Softball Team.

Living family members include a son and his wife, James and Royann Mathis of Bowdinham, Maine; two grandsons, Aaron Mathis of Newport, R.I., and Jared Mathis of Brunswick, Maine; a brother, John Mathis of Denver, Colo., and a sister, Anne Mull of Prescott, Ariz.
