Grace Dodge
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 20 for Grace Dodge, age 90, of Rock Falls at the Old Stone United Methodist Church in Rock Falls with Rev. Lisa Locoh officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery in Rudd. Grace Dodge (Grandma Farm) died Thursday, May 15, 2003 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Grace was born September 20, 1912 in Floyd, the daughter of Jess and Bonnie (Miller) Tanner. She was raised in the Orchard area by her mother Bonnie and step-father Frank Hoel. A special aunt, Luraine Miller lived with them.
Dancing was Grace's favorite entertainment growing up. She attended Orchard School until she married Maurice Dodge on April 5, 1930 in Charles City.
Maurice and Grace farmed in Chickasaw, Rudd and Fredericksburg before moving to the farm southwest of Rock Falls in 1974. Grace was still living on the farm until the day she fell and was taken to the hospital May 9.
Besides helping with the farming and raising eight children, she enjoyed painting and teaching Artex. Starting in 1978 she began making ornaments for Christmas for each family member. This past year she made over 110 for her large family, most being her own designs. In the summer planting and caring for her flowers and trees and watching trumpet vine climb to the top of her evergreen tree were her joy. She always was taking care of everyone else in her family. Her greatest enjoyment was her large family as she was an only child.
Preceding Grace in death were her mother and her stepfather Frank Hoel, her husband Maurice, son Jerry Lee Dodge, special aunt Luraine Miller, stepbrother Louis Hoel, son-in-law Sam Sauve and two grandsons Kim and Andy Showalter.
