Bob was born on Novmber 21, 1922, in rural Floyd County, Iowa, the son of Herman and Karoline (Troge) Handt. He served in the United States Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star for his service in New Guinea and the Philippines.

On Dec. 18, 1949, he married Wilma Koebrick at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Bob worked at the Oliver Tractor Plant-White Motor Corporation in Charles City for 38 years, retiring in 1980. Prior to suffering a stroke in 2002, Bob enjoyed playing euchre at the Elks Club, was a longtime member of Wildwood Golf Course, played many of the area golf courses with his son, Mike, and especially looked forward to the annual fishing trips to Mille Lacs and other Minnesota lakes with his brothers, Willis and Dick, and other relatives and friends.

He also enjoyed catching small mouth bass and walleyes locally in the Cedar and Shell Rock Rivers. He was also an avid ice fisherman and had a talent for catching crappies. Following the stroke, he was still able to, and thoroughly enjoyed mowing lawns with his son, who operated a lawn care business.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Florence Field and Helen Kozak; brothers Chuck Handt and Dick Handt; brothers-in-law Emory Field and Boris Kozak; and a sister-in-law, Helen Handt.

Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of 60 years, Wilma; son, Mike Handt of Mason City; daughter, Teri (David) Nelson of Medina, Minn.; grandchildren, Kristi and Matthew Nelson, both of La Crosse, Wis.; brother, Willis (Shielah) Handt of Mason City; sister-in-law, Lolly Handt of Charles City; a special niece, Sandy (Ken) Kline of Mason City; good friends Robert and Diann Riha of Charles City; many nieces and nephews; and not to be overlooked is Bob’s dear little companion, Scamp, who knew when he was not feeling well and spent many hours curled up at Bob’s feet while he napped on the couch.
