Oliver W. Hughes, 93, of Charles City, died Wednesday evening, January 27, 2010, at Cedar Health in Charles City. Pastor Phil Corr of the First Congregational Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Oliver Winfield Hughes was born January 6, 1917, in Hudson Township, Wisconsin, the son of Almon J. and Ruby (Benoy) Hughes. He graduated from the Roberts High School in Roberts, Wisconsin.

From 1942 to 1945, Oliver served in the United States Army. In November of 1943, he was united in marriage to Mary Genevieve Deere at Chicago. They later divorced. Oliver was a furniture builder and for 20 years he was employed at the University of Minnesota as Senior Construction Supervisor. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, and Carpenter’s Union of Minnesota. His interests included furniture building, playing bridge, ballroom dancing, reading biographical history, traveling, playing the organ and trumpet and photography.

Living family members include his five children, Sheilah Dedrickson (Jack) McClain of Charles City, Barbara (Paul) Williams of Orange Beach, Ala., Pamela (Tom) Ernst of St. Paul, Minn., Norma (John) Stevenson of Eagan, Minn. and Almon John Hughes III of Burnsville, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and many cousins; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents; daughter, Lesley Hughes; two sisters, Maxine Baier and Marcella Hughes; and two brothers, Wendall "Jiggs" Hughes and Lesley Hughes.
