CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Wendell L. Hobert, 89, of Charles City, died Thursday, January 14, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Wendell Hobert will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City, with Pastor Ruth Yeaton of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. There will be a flag presentation and taps by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue an hour before the service Monday at the funeral home.

Wendell Lester Hobert was born May 15, 1920, at Charles City, the son of Lester and Lulu (Pfeiffer) Hobert. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1938.

On Sept. 28, 1941, he was united in marriage to Phyllis "Fern" Newton at Charles City. From 1942 to 1946, he served in the United States Navy. After World War II, Wendell farmed and did electrical work for local contractors until 1975 when he started Hobert Electric. He was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Charles City Patriotic Association, and Care Review Committee for Iowa Nursing Homes. Wendell was active as a leader for the Boy Scouts and the Electrical Board for Charles City. His interests included trout fishing, mushroom hunting, gardening, traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Living family members include his six children, Linda (Robert) Milton of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert (Judy) Hobert of Penn Valley, Calif., Lester (Linda) Hobert of Charles City, Mary (Jerry) Cross of Forest City, Edward (Teresa) Hobert of Charles City and Aaron Hobert and fiancée Diane Shearman of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy (Don) Swinton of Waverly; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sister, Phyllis Mae Hobert; and a nephew, Mike Swinton.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church, 105 Chapel Lane Charles City, IA 50616 or the Charles City Patriotic Association, 1505 Grand Ave N. Charles City, IA 50616.
