ROCKFORD, IOWA - Albert "Whitey" Schultz, 86, formerly of Rockford, died on Thursday, January 7, 2010, at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs, Iowa.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 12, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City. Pastor Jim Turner of the Shell Rock First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday, Jan. 11. For those desiring, memorials may be made to the Albert Schultz Memorial Fund. Stories, thoughts and condolences may be shared with the family on the funeral home Web site at www.Fullertonfh.com.
Whitey was born on August 16, 1923, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the son of Ernest and Dorothy (Schwade) Schultz. His family moved to Nora Springs when he was very young. Whitey graduated from Nora Springs and attended a semester of college at Upper Iowa University, before being drafted into the Army during World War II. He served for 27 months in the South Pacific, receiving a Bronze Star for his part in the liberation of Luzon. Whitey was wounded during his service in the Pacific Islands.
After returning home from the war, he was united in marriage to Shirley Symes on April 6, 1947. The couple made their home in Nora Springs. Shirley passed away in December 1947. Whitey then met LaVon Schrage Brown and they were married on Nov. 26, 1948. He would also begin his career with Lehigh Portland Cement in 1948, where he would be employed for nearly 30 years. He was a repairman and also served as the president for the Cement, Lime and Gypsum Local Union 106 and was at one time the regional vice president for the union. Whitey and his family moved to an acreage in Rockford in 1959, where he operated a farm.
LaVon passed away in February 2003.
Whitey was very proud of his role in the NIAD Labor Council and his role in the Clear Lake Labor Day Dance and the scholarship program for deserving high school students. He was very active in his union, and his service earned him the honor of being in the Union Hall of Fame AFL-CIO.
Throughout his life, Whitey developed into a master storyteller, always on the lookout for someone to tell his stories to. In his later years, he enjoyed playing cards and following the Women's Pool League.
Whitey will be loved and missed by his many friends and family.
Those left to honor his memory include his children, Virginia Brown of Charles City, Virgil (Claudia) Brown of New Concord, N.C., Larry Schultz of Waverly, Dan (Sue) Schultz of Stillwater, Minn., Mark (Beth) Schultz of Gales Ferry, Conn., Duane (Jane) Schultz of Iowa Falls, Peggy Cheney of Indianola and Ben (Valerie) Schultz of Des Moines; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Irma Peterson; and brother, Fred Schultz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Shirley and LaVon; grandson, Doug Brown; sisters, Rosie Lee and Bertha Swartwood; and brother, Herman Schultz.
