CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Dayle R. Smith, 90, of 805 Freeman St., Charles City died on Tuesday, (October 23, 2007) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, (October 26, 2007) at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City, with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.
The family will greet friends and relatives from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. A prayer service will begin at 6:30 p.m. The visitation will continue on Friday at the church, one hour prior to Dayle’s service. Dayle Richard Smith was born March 22, 1917, in rural Horton, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Elizabeth (Everly) Smith. He attended country school in Pleasant Grove Township. Dayle’s employment during the depression years included fighting forest fires at age 16 in Minnesota. Dayle was united in marriage to Margaret Bell on August 11, 1939 in Elkader, Iowa. They shared an enduring love for 64 years until her death on October 28, 2003. Dayle was employed at Oliver Tractor’s for 35 years, where he worked in the gear department. He held the offices of recording secretary and chief steward for the U.A.W., local #1315. He and Margaret also farmed for several years and after his retirement from Oliver in 1970, they owned a six county seed business. They eventually sold their farm and moved into town in 1998. They were avid travelers and enjoyed visiting every state within the United States throughout their lives. His interests included fishing, gardening, story-telling and writing poetry. He will be especially remembered for his wonderful sense of humor.
Dale is survived by two sons, Steve (Karolyn) Smith of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Mike (Barb) Smith of Charles City, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Jacque (Steve) Harms, Kris (Marty) Garrett, Mark (Kristy) Smith, Pat (Amy) Smith, Shelley (John) Fitzgerald, Angie (Joey) Hinke and Mandi Smith; thirteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Loucks of Oelwein, Iowa; one brother, Howard Smith of Rudd, Iowa. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Shirley Nehls of Mason City and Selma Bell of North Bend, Oregon, and several nieces and nephews.
Dayle was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret B. Smith; three sisters, Ruth Shannon, Iva Stille and Blanch Hinders and two brothers, Wilford and Russell Smith.
