CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Velda M. Apel, 92, of 602 11th St. in Charles City, IA died Sunday evening (September 30, 2007) at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee St. in Charles City with the Rev. Gary Van Wert officiating. Interment will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. The visitation will continue on Wednesday at the church, one hour prior to Velda’s service. Velda was born September 2, 1915 in Webster City, IA, the daughter of James Edward and Maud S. (Studley) Gage. She attended school in Webster City until her junior year in high school when she went to live with her sister in Charles City. She returned to Webster City and graduated from the Webster City High School.

Velda was united in marriage to Ervin F. Apel on April 1, 1942 in Phoenix, AZ. The couple returned to Charles City and farmed south of town.

Velda is survived by her daughter, Susan (Loren) Brandau of Osage, IA; her son, Ronald (Linda) Apel of Charles City, IA; her daughter, JoAnn (Duane) Wood of Robins, IA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren, other survivors are a sister, Mabel Warwick of Webster City, IA and a brother and sister-in-law, Virgil and Lillian Gage of Webster City, IA and a sister-in-law, Ruth Gage of Marshalltown, IA.

In addition to her parents, Velda was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin; two brothers and six sisters.

Velda was a devoted mother and grandmother, and enjoyed collecting handbells and playing cards. She was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City.
