Opal L. Guthart, 80 of rural Ionia, Iowa, died Saturday, September 19, at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating. The pall will be placed by Opal's son, daughter and daughter-in-law. Tim Schwickerath will be the crossbearer. Organist for the service will be Dennis Strum accompanied by vocalist, Roger Wedeking. Roger will also be the accordianist.

Interment will be in St. Boniface Cemetery, Ionia with Dave Auchstetter, Jerry Carrol, Dale Poe, Richard Hansen, Ron Venz and Mike Tilkes as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Opal's grandchildren, Shannon Guthart, Jennifer Guthart, Staci Schwickerath, Tim Schwickerath, Alex Guthart and great-grandson Alex Weston.

Friends may call 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, New Hampton. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Opal was born July 8, 1929, in Floyd County, the only child of John and Isabelle (Meyer) Timmons. She received her education in rural country schools.

On October 29, 1949, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia, she was united in marriage to Garland Guthart. To this union three children were born. The couple farmed the Guthart family farm north of Bassett.

Opal had been a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia and for the past several years began attending services at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton, with her daughter. She and her husband enjoyed traveling with their children on numerous family vacations and loved living in the country where they enjoyed their many pets. In her free time, Opal enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, canning and the paper route she shared with her husband. Garland Guthart died on April 9, 1995. Opal also helped as a waitress for many years at the former Mr. Z’s Café in Bassett.

Opal is survived by one son, Douglas (Julia) Guthart of Alamogordo, N.M.; one daughter, Edna Schwickerath of New Hampton; one daughter-in-law, Debbie Guthart of St. Charles, Mo; five grandchildren, Shannon Guthart, Jennifer Guthart, Staci Schwickerath, Tim Schwickerath and Alex Guthart; one great-grandson, Alex Weston; one sister-in-law, Rita Guthart of Greene.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a son, John Guthart.
