DiesNORA SPRINGS, IOWA — Funeral services were conducted Monday for Miss Vienna Helen Gaylord, 85, Nora Springs, who died Friday.
Miss Gaylord is a pioneer resident of Nora Springs. She was born in Nora Springs Jan. 27, 1871, the daughter of Edson Gaylord and Helen Lamb Gaylord. Her father was one of the pioneers in the Nora Springs community, settling in Nora Springs in 1853. He came from Litchfield County, Connecticut. The first family home, a log cabin, was built the following year. Miss Gaylord, the third of three children, was born here. The cabin is still standing at Gaylord Glade.
In 1885 Vienna was a member of the first graduating class of the Nora Springs High School and in 1893 she was a member of the first class to be graduated at the Nora Springs Seminary. She taught school for 15 years in and around Nora Springs.
In December of 1886 she became a member of the Christian Springs and in was the oldest member of the church. For many years she was the superintendent of the Bible Study Home Department.
Her only surviving relatives are second cousins, She made her home with one second cousin, Helen Severe. Services were held at the First Christian Church here with the Rev. Roy Smith, pastor, officiating. Assisting was the Rev. R. L. Williams, Mason City. Burial was in Rock Grove Cemetery. The Sheckler Funeral Home was in charge.
