J. Byron `Red' Behrends

ROCKFORD, IOWA -- Services for J. Byron "Red" Behrends, 82, of Buffalo Center, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the North Prairie Lutheran Church, Leland, with the Rev. Ervin Hesterberg officiating. Interment will be in East Lawn Cemetery, Algona. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today at Schumburg Funeral Home, Rockford, with a 7 p.m. prayer service. There will be further visitation from 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Behrends was born Oct. 15, 1912 at Seneca, Iowa, and passed away Monday (June 5, 1995) at the Salsbury Baptist Home, Charles City.

Byron was the son of Ornie Behrends and Lizzie (nee) DeMarese Behrends. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Byron farmed in the Thompson-Buffalo Center area from 1947 until 1968.

He was united in marriage to Emma E. Schueler on Aug. 30, 1950 in Albert Lea, Minn.

Byron is survived by one daughter, Elaine Batton of Lakefield, Minn.; two sons, Richard Casler of Leland, Iowa, and Donald Casler of Rockford; one brother, LaVern and his wife, Margaret of Kansas City, Mo.; four sisters-in-law, Nila Behrends of Owatonna, Minn., Leona Behrends of Kandiyohi, Minn., Lita Behrends of Topeka, Kan., and Florence Behrends of Lone Rock, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emma; two sisters, Leona Behrends, and Lucy Neilsen; six brothers, Ornie Behrends, Seibelt Behrends, Joe Behrends, Vincent Behrends, Roy Behrends, and Gary Behrends; and one grandchild.
