CHARLES CITY, IOWA - L.L. "Vern" Lane, 68, of 1943 Gil Avenue, Charles City, the former sheriff of Floyd County, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 1995, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City, following a lengthy illness.
No funeral services are planned. His body has been donated to the Anatomy Department of the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.
L.L. "Vern" Lane was born on January 25, 1927, in Charles City, the son of Lucius Lane and Geraldine Lane (nee Novak.) He received his education at schools in Momence, Illinois.
He entered the United States Army, serving in Korea during World War II. He rose to the rank of master sergeant, serving as a director of transportation. He returned to the United States and on December 20, 1946, in Orlando, Florida, he married Elaine Margaret Wells. The couple made their home in Hammond, Indiana and Michigan before settling in Charles City in 1949.
Upon returning to Charles City, Mr. Lane took a position with the Charles City Police Department. He held that position for nine years before taking a position as a deputy sheriff under Floyd County Sheriff Ralph McCartney.
In 1960 he was first elected sheriff of Floyd County. He held that position until his retirement in 1992.
Mr. Lane was a member of the V.F.W. Post #3914, the American Legion Shannon Wilson Post #174 and the B.P.O. Elks #418, all of Charles City. He was also a member of the Iowa Sheriff's Association.
In 1969, he was named Man Of The Year by the Charles City Area Chamber of Commerce.
Living family members include his wife, Elaine, of Charles City; a son and his wife, Marke and Laura Lane of Raytown, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Lola Lane and a grandson, Lance Lane, both of Joplin, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Lance Lane, who was killed in an automobile accident in 1969.
