Imogene May was born on July 8, 1925, in Greene, one of six children to John and Willhelmina "Drogemuller" O'Brien. She graduated from Greene High School and then continued her education at LaJames School of Beauty in Mason City.

Imogene was united in marriage to Donald Abbott in 1947 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines. They lived in Greene for two years while Imogene cared for her mother and then moved to Rockford where they owned and operated Imogene's Beauty Shop and Don's Barber Shop. In the beginning Imogene was upstairs and Don was downstairs on Main Street in Rockford. She operated her beauty shop for 40 years, retiring about 1994.

As Don's health declined, she took excellent and loving care of him. The last eight years of her life she lived with her son in Clive.

Early in life, she was a bridge card fanatic and was on three different clubs. They were instrumental and some of the founding members of building and opening the Rockford Golf and Country Club where they enjoyed many golf and social events. She was also active in her community with Daffodil Days, served as a room mother at school and was active in her church. They took kid trips to Minnesota, Colorado, South Dakota and Michigan to spend time with the family. Imogene enjoyed sewing and baking for the family.

Those thankful in sharing Imogene's life include her son, Donald, and wife, Erin Abbott, Clive; Donnette and her husband, Dennis Long, Montezuma; five grandchildren, Emily (Jason) Randall, Yorge and Angelina Abbott, Spencer and Abby Long; one sister, Shirley (Bill) Henley, Clarksville; and one brother, Neal (Marjorie) O'Brien, Greene.

Her parents, her husband, Donald, of 45 years who died in 1992, and three brothers: John, Lyle and Robert O'Brien, preceded her in death.
