Edna Katherine (Brunner) Merfeld

GREENE, IOWA - Funeral Mass for Edna K. Merfeld, age 102, of 708 S. Jefferson, Indianola, formerly of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 6, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene, where there will be a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary service conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Edna Katherine Brunner was born August 12, 1906, in rural Union Township, Floyd County., a daughter of Jacob and Sadie (Vorhes) Brunner and died on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Society in Indianola. She received her education in the Marble Rock Public Schools and graduated from Greene High School in 1925.

She was united in marriage to Henry W. Merfeld on August 11, 1925. They made their home in the Greene area where she was employed as a "Central" Operator for the Iowa State Telephone Company which in turn, merged and became part of the United Telephone Company of Greene.

On October 15, 1962, Greene went to a dial system thus eliminating the need for operators; Edna moved to New Virginia, Iowa, where she continued her work. She returned to Greene on June 1, 1968. Edna moved to Osceola, in June 1999, where she lived for four and a half years before moving to the Good Samaritan Society in Indianola.

Edna is survived by three daughters: Phyllis (Richard) Leavens, of Charles City, Marcia (Fritz) Dickman, of Clarksville, and Helen Reed, of New Virginia, Iowa; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Merfeld, Dec. 7, 1934; parents, and one brother: Edwin Brunner.
