NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Walter R. Gratias, age 83, of Nora Springs, Floyd county, Iowa, died on Thursday, January 16, 1997, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. John Bates officiating. Burial will be in the Rudd Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye.
Walter R. Gratias was born April 5, 1913, in Nora Springs, a son of Hugo and Katharine (Ahrens) Gratias. He was a 1931 graduate of Nora Springs High School.
He was united in marriage to Florence [Anna] Weitze on February 20, 1937, at her parent's home. He farmed north of Nora Springs and worked for the P.M.A. government program. He also worked for Floyd County Maintenance.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church, Nora Springs.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Gratias, Nora Springs; three daughters, Loretta Bremer and her husband, Pat, of Chicago, Ill.; Shirley Witt and husband, Gerry, of Chicago, Ill.; Debra Norton and her husband, Phillip, of Bloomfield; one son, Gordon Gratias and his wife, Linda, of Des Moines; eight grandchildren, Kelly, Jeff and Scott Gratias, all of Des Moines; Dawn and Todd Witt, both of Florida; Nicole, Abby and Drew Norton, all of Bloomfield; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Gratias and Jason Collins, both of Des Moines; three sisters, Helen Quandahl, Mason City; Ethel Taylor, Mason City; and Lorraine Siemens of Dysart; three brothers, Arthur Gratias of Mason City; Ralph Gratias of Mason City, and Paul Gratias of Osage.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Dorothy.
