Dale A. Vanderlan, 91, a former business man in Charles City, passed away, Thursday, February 26, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City of natural causes.

No services were held per Dale’s request.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City on Saturday, February 28, 2009.

Dale Arnold Vanderlan was born January 23, 1918, at Parkersburg, the eldest of five sons born to William J. and Jennie (Cordes) Vanderlan. He graduated from the New Hartford High School in 1935. Thereafter he worked in Waterloo before being inducted in the U.S. Army on May 28, 1941.

Dale served in Italy, Africa, Ireland and Scotland and was discharged August 26, 1945. He was a medic and while serving in Italy was awarded the Silver Star for his bravery while attending to fallen soldiers on the front line. As a result of these memories his wishes were not to have a funeral. He felt he deserved no more than his fellow soldiers who lost their lives in the war.

Upon his return from the service he worked at the Oliver plant before successfully starting his recycling business which he had for over 50 years.

He married Patricia Summerfield in Charles City on June 18, 1949 and she assisted him in the business. Dale enjoyed belonging and going to the V.F.W. and enjoying the company of his friends there. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends and enjoyed being with people and telling jokes and stories.

Those left to mourn his memory include his three daughters, Cynthia (Richard) Thompson of Colo., Nancy (John) Saxfield of Charles City and Jayne (Gene) Southard of Colo.; five grandchildren, Valerie, Allen, Justin, Jesse and Lindsey; several great grandchildren; three brothers, Richard (Barbara) Vanderlan of S.C., Donald (Sharon) Vanderlan of Calif. and Wayne (Betsy) of Calif.; sister-in-law, Marilyn Vanderlan of Charles City; many nieces and nephews; including a special nephew, Luke Dix.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patricia in 1974; son, Dale David Vanderlan in 1958; grandson, Eric Thompson in 2000; and brother, Vernon Vanderlan in 2006.
