ROCKFORD — Ivan H. Achenbach, 93, a resident of the Nora Springs Care Center and formerly of 706 W. Main Ave., Rockford, died Sunday evening (May 22, 2005) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, 205 First Ave. N.W. in Rockford with the Rev. Kenneth Kent officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

The family greeted relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St. in Rockford. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral service today at the church.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to Hospice of North Iowa or to the First United Methodist Church in Rockford.

Ivan Henry Achenbach was born on July 14, 1911, in rural Ulster Township, to Henry C. and Lydia (Greenzweig) Achenbach. He was the first of three children born to his parents. Ivan attended school at the Ulster Township country school from kindergarten through 8th grade and graduated from Rockford High School.

Ivan lived all his life in Floyd County and had a passion for the open, fresh air of living on the farm. Following his graduation, Ivan determined his future was as a grain and livestock operator and continued the legacy of his father on the family farm, east of Rockford.

On July 12, 1936, Ivan was united in marriage to Vera Pfundheller at her parent's farm in Ulster Township. As a couple, they treasured long trips and car rides to sightsee or visit relatives and friends.

Ivan and Vera were rarely seen apart and worked hand-in-hand in all aspects of their farming operation. Since the mid-'50s, Ivan and his nephew, Jim Marth, joined their talents and farmed together. They shared many long conversations and developed a lasting and close relationship. Life changed dramatically for Ivan when Vera died on Feb. 20, 1995.

Ivan was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rockford and a former member of the Elk Creek Methodist Church. He was a board member of his church, the Farmer's Co-op Exchange, the Rockford Co-op Creamery and was an Ulster Township Trustee.

Some of Ivan's activities and hobbies included reading the newspapers, having telephone conversations with his family and friends, caring for pets, playing cards and planting and harvesting with his I.H. tractors! He is described as a caring, focused and patient man who delighted in being included in the lives of his extended family and their children.

Ivan will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Ivan in death were his wife, Vera Achenbach; his parents, Henry and Lydia Achenbach; his sister, Beulah Marth; and his brother, Wilbur Achenbach.
