BORN IN FLOYD COUNTY

ALDEN, IOWA — Owen "Dex" Keith Hennigar, 83, of Alden, died Friday (March 11, 2005) at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

A memorial service for Owen will be held at a later date with burial in the Diagonal Cemetery in Diagonal, Iowa.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Surls Funeral Home, 1207 Alden St., Alden.

Dex was born on Feb. 17, 1922, in Rockford, Iowa, to Art and Hazel (Titus) Hennigar. He attended school in Northern Iowa while doing farm work. He served in the CID division of the U.S. Army military police during World War II. After his discharge, Owen stayed in Colorado. He worked in farm cattle and trucking, hauling hay, rock, livestock and farm machinery.

Owen married Alma Carolyne Taylor on April 10, 1946, in Lakewood. Colo,

He moved to Nuna, Colo., in 1978 and then to Alden in 1994. He retired from Agland in 1987 because of ill health. He still trucked when he could.

He was an amateur rodeo rider, both saddle bronc and bareback. He loved horses and his dogs. He enjoyed reading, company, and visiting his friends.

Owen was a member of Collins-Dunning American Legion Post No. 201 of Alden.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alma, of Alden; four brothers, Don Hennigar and his wife, Karma, of Jefferson, Loren Hennigar and his wife, Nonie, of Northwood, Hollis Hennigar of Fort Worth, Texas, and Stanley Hennigar and his wife, Sharon, of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Betty Harris of Miami, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Lynn Van Eborg of Denver, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews who were very dear to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eileen; and five brothers, Wayne, Elwood, Glen, Bruce, and Daryle.

Surls Funeral Home, Alden, is handling the arrangements.
