Marilyn Elaine Van Horn

ANKENY — Marilyn Van Horn, 75, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today, January 15, 2005, in Charles City at St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa. Visitation and a prayer service were held on Friday in Ankeny and will resume one hour prior to the services today.

Marilyn was born on Jan. 7, 1930, in Waverly to Edwin and Clara Kohagen. She married Lloyd Van Horn in 1948 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. They lived in Charles City where they raised their family. Her family and friends were her treasure, and she believed she was a richly blessed woman.

Marilyn moved to Ankeny in 1994, where she worked at East Elementary in food service, and built a life centered around her friends and family. It was at East Elementary where she found yet another treasure in the staff and students that she grew to love, and who in turn loved her deeply.

Marilyn joyfully spent most of her time with her family, but she also enjoyed watching sports — most passionately the Hawkeyes, the Cubs, and the Vikings. Marilyn sewed beautifully and volunteered her time by making clothes for Floyd County Breast Cancer Bears, clothing more than 100 bears for giving to cancer survivors.

She is survived by her son, Doug (Jan) Van Horn of Blue Mounds, Wis., and their children, Teresa and Jason (Liz); daughter, Cheryl (Rod) Spieker of Ankeny, and their children, Michael (Julie) and Michelle; son, Brad (Tammy) of Minneapolis, and their children, Steve (Jamie), Angie (Doug) Croll and Sara; daughter, Andi (Brian) Donaghy of Ankeny, and their children, Christi, Molly, and Amy; and a sister, Ardath Kreimeyer. Marilyn was also the proud great-grandmother of Aibree Vanessa Spieker, daughter of Mike and Julie, and Carter Bradley Van Horn, son of Steve and Jamie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; and granddaughter, Vanessa Spieker.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the exceptional care and love given to Marilyn by the Mercy Hospice staff and volunteers.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice, Johnston, or Floyd County Friends of Cancer. Arrangements are being handled by Ankeny-McLaren Funeral Home of West Des Moines.
