Marion Virginia Benton was born on August 14, 1926, in Port Huron, Mich., a daughter of Walter Elmer and Mabel Leona (Norris) Benton, and died Saturday (Feb. 5, 2004) at the Hospice Unit of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
As a small child, her family moved to Iowa, settling in Northwood and later in Manly, where she received her education in the public schools. Following her schooling she worked as a waitress in Manly.
She was united in marriage to Arden Suby on May 2, 1947, in Jacksonville, Minn. Following their marriage they lived in Fertile and later in Manly and Forest City, where she was employed by Fleetguard Mfg. in Lake Mills. In 1970 she moved to Hanlontown where she was employed by the grocery store until her retirement in 1979. She did child-care for several years before moving to Marble Rock in July 2003.
Marion was a self-taught woman, being an avid reader, she was well versed in politics and current events. She enjoyed listening to talk radio and classical music. In later years, after loosing her sight, she still remained self sufficient, being able to do her own homemaking. Her self-independence was paramount.
She will be sadly missed by her children: Carol (Fred) Wreghitt of Marble Rock, Jan Jones of Ashville, N.C., Craig (Connie) Suby of Freeport, Ill., Doug (special friend Kristie Lambert) Suby of Garner; seven grandchildren, including: Darla (Gary) Kinseth of Mason City, Jeffery (Nadine) Wreghitt of Hampton, Kristie (Kurt) Richards of Freeport, Ill., Andre (Kristin) Jones, Aaron Jones, Janna (Mike) Watkins, all of Ashville, N.C.; 17 great grandchildren; three sisters: Marie Larson of Estherville, Ginger (Leroy) Helmer, of Manly, and Darlene DeMaris of Lincoln, Neb.
Marion was preceded in death by her husband on July 16, 1984; her parents; four nephews: Robert Allen Larson, Gerald Larson, Steven Portis, and Michael Portis.
