DR. THEODORE R. ZERAN

BURLINGTON — Dr. Theodore R. Zeran, 68, of Burlington, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 2004) at his home following a short illness.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church in Burlington. Dr. Zeran has been cremated

Theodore is survived by his wife, Margaret, and three children, Mary Zeran (Jeff Schipper) of Cedar Rapids, Michael Zeran (Barbara) of Iowa City, and Melissa Fell (Daniel) of Fort Madison. Also surviving are one grandchild, Emma Fell; a sister, Barbara Dugan of Phoenix, Ariz., and one brother, Richard Zeran of Rockford.

Theodore was born July 1, 1936, in Rockford, the son of Russell and Mildred (O’Rourke) Zeran. He married Margaret Knight on Sept. 19, 1959, in Rockford.

Dr. Zeran spent most of his young life in Rockford, graduating from Rockford High School in 1955. He then proceeded with his education obtaining a B.A. and B.S. degree from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, in 1959.

He then enrolled in the University of Iowa School of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1964. He went on to complete family practice residency at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines, and an ophthalmology residency at the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minn.

His military service included two years in the Public Health Services in Alexandria, Va., at the St. Elizabeth Hospital as a general surgeon.

Theodore opened his ophthalmology practice in 1972; he practiced for 27 years before retiring in 1997.

Theodore was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William; and a sister, Marlys Arends.

He was a member of the Des Moines-Louisa Co. Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and the Carthage Lake Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the First Congregational Church in Burlington and Great River Hospice.
