EVERETT ‘DICK’ MERLE HANDT

CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Everett “Dick” Merle Handt, 84, of Charles City, passed away Wednesday (Aug. 11, 2004) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital of cancer.

Funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday [Aug. 14, 2004] at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church, 312 First Ave., Charles City, with Pastor James Grabitske officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City.

Dick was born on January 13, 1920, in rural Floyd County, the son of Herman W. and Karoline E. "Lena" (Troge) Handt. He attended rural schools in Floyd County.

On Aug. 23, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lolita Clifford at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Osage.

Dick worked at White Farm Oliver for 38 years before retiring in 1978. He enjoyed being with his family and visiting with friends, and had a true love for hunting and fishing. He was a charter member of Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was an active member for 58 years.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Lolly; three daughters, Eileene (Larry) Katcher, of Cedar Falls, Linda (Mike) Willert, of Nashua, and Diann (Steve) Lindeman, of Maplewood, Minn.; four grandchildren, James (Phyllis) Katcher, of Cedar Falls, Joel (Susan) Katcher, of Cedar Rapids, Michelle Willert, of Fairmont, Minn., Libbie Willert, of Nashua; three great-grandchildren, Jackie, Sarah, and Matthew Katcher; and two brothers, Bob Handt, of Charles City, and Willis Handt, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Florence Field, and Helen Kozak; and one brother, Charles Handt.
