NORA SPRINGS, IOWA — Janet J. Austin, 80, of 308 N. Seminary Ave., Nora Springs, died Monday (June 28, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Christian Church, 102 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Glen Bandell officiating. Burial will be at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Sheckler Colonial Chapel 114 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.

Janet Irene Juel Austin, the daughter of Godfrey and Mabel (Brown) Juel was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Dike, Iowa. She attended school in Dike until her sophomore year, when she moved to Traer, Iowa. She graduated from Traer in 1941. Janet attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, graduating with an elementary teaching degree in 1943. She began teaching in Nora Springs the fall of that year.

On June 1, 1948, Janet was united in marriage to Conway L. Austin at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home in Nora Springs.

Janet retired from teaching fifth and sixth grade in 1986. She liked to travel, camp, playing cards, crocheting and doing crafts. She enjoyed playing games with her family and watching her grandchildren’s sporting events.

Janet is survived by three children, Janis Engel and her husband, Cleon, of Nora Springs; and two sons, Joel Austin of Nora Springs, and Jay Austin and his wife, Julie, of Mason City; grandchildren, Roman Engel and his wife, Jen, of Manly, Rusty Engel and his wife, Stacy, of Manly, Raine Engel of Nora Springs, Aaron Austin of Des Moines, Justin Austin, of Mason City; and great-grandchildren, Austin Engel, of Vancouver, Wash., Dakkota Engel of Manly, and Mitchell and Anthony Reinken, of Manly. Also surviving is sister, Verena Vorba and her husband, Harold, of Traer; brother, Ariel Juel and his wife, Marjorie, of San Jose, Calif.; brothers-in-law, Cortland Austin and his wife, Shirley, of Traer, George Austin and his wife, Gayle, of Donnellson; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Conway “Connie” Austin; her parents, Mabel and Godfrey Juel; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard Austin and his wife, Georgine, and Gerald Austin and his wife, Patricia.
