CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Winfred M. Merfeld, 86, of 802 Fifth St. in Charles City, died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 2004) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane, Charles City, with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Imma-culate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane, Charles City. A rosary will be held at 5 p.m., with the scripture wake service to follow at 7 p.m. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Those wishing to extend memorials or an expression of sympathy may direct them to the family.

CHARLES CITY — Winifred “Winnie” M. Merfeld, 86, of 802 Fifth Ave., Charles City, died Wednesday morning (Feb. 18, 2004) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. to-day at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane, Charles City, with the Rev. Carl Ries presiding. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation was held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane, Charles City, with a rosary recited at 5 p.m. followed by a scripture wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service at the church.

Those wishing to extend memorials or an expression of sympathy may direct them to the family.

“Winnie” M. Merfeld was born Sept. 5, 1917, in Corning, Kan., the daughter of Joseph and Catherine G. (Gudenkauf) Rottinghaus. She graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Dougherty, Class of 1935.

On Aug. 22, 1939, “Winnie” was united in marriage to John E. Merfeld. The couple made their home on a farm in the Dougherty and Marble Rock areas before moving to a farm south of Colwell in 1974. In 1987, the couple moved to Charles City.

In addition to helping her husband farm, “Winnie” en-joyed caring for her large family and extended families by baking cinnamon rolls, homemade breads, pies and cookies.

She enjoyed all sports, es-pecially watching her grandsons wrestle and play baseball. “Winnie” also loved to play cards with cribbage and 500 being her favorites.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Theresa’s Circle, Rosary Society, The Birthday Club, and Soroptimist “500” Club.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in “Winnie’s” life are her children, Joann (Wade) Brantley of Carlisle, Janice Merfeld of Tempe, Ariz., Jolene (Lyle) Bohn of Waseca, Minn., Judy (Mike) Wollner of Mason City, Janella (Joe) Steele of Ft. Worth, Texas, John (Deb) Merfeld of Columbus, Wis., Joe (Chris) Merfeld of Almo, Ky., Jill (Gary) Flaa of Maple Grove, Minn., and Jennifer (Steve) Hubert of Charles City.

“Winnie” is survived by her 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; her sisters and brothers, Mary Catherine Clark of Decatur, Ill., Sr. Mary Michael Rottinghaus and Sr. Mary Anthony Rottinghaus, both of Dubuque, Raymond (Teresa) Rottinghaus of Mason City, Sr. Mary Rosanne Rottinghaus of Dubuque, Joseph (Dee) Rottinghaus of Clear Lake, and James (Dixie) Rottinghaus of Urbandale.

“Winnie” is preceded in death by her husband, John E. Merfeld, on Oct. 11, 1991; a granddaughter, Katrina; her parents, a brother and sister-in-law, Anthony and Norma Rottinghaus; an infant brother, Raphael Rottinghaus, and a brother-in-law, Jack Clark.
