LELAND V. ‘VAUGHN’ SHAPLEY

NORA SPRINGS — Leland V. “Vaughn” Shapley, 71, of 403 Sixth St. N.W., Nora Springs, died Saturday (Feb. 7, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Curtis DeLong officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs, where full military honors will be conducted by members of H.D.S. Post 449, Nora Springs American Legion.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave. in Nora Springs.

Leland Vaughn Shapley was born April 25, 1932, in Floyd County, a son of William and Katie (Guthart) Shapley.

He attended Floyd County school systems. He then pursued farming in Marble Rock.

Vaughn enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on Jan. 17, 1952. He served in the Korean War, and was honorably discharged on Jan. 16, 1960.

He was united in marriage to Marcene (Fisher) Shapley on July 6, 1957 in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Nora Springs. He continued farming in Rudd until he attended Hawkeye Tech, graduating in 1969, and began working for Montgomery Ward as a mechanic until 1972 when he was injured. He then continued to farm seasonal for Dr. L.A. Bascom in Nora Springs.

He loved to farm and enjoyed tearing down houses and buildings for the wood. He was a great collector of many things especially car replicas and pictures. His greatest love was his family.

He is survived by sons, Michael Shapley, of Muscatine; Mark Shapley, of Mason City; daughters, Debra Shapley, of Mason City; Meredith Willis, of Clear Lake; Jackie (Rodney) Welsh, Eldora; Jennifer Shapley, Nora Springs; grandchildren; Lisa Cox, Mason City; Caylor Shapley, Ames; Angela Shapley, Nora Springs; one great-granddaughter, Katura Welsh, of Eldora; one brother, Donald Shapley, of Arkansas; his cat Callie Shapley; along with many nieces, nephews, sisters-in law, brothers-in-law, other relatives and friends.

Vaughn was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marcene on Dec. 25, 1997; one infant daughter, sisters-in-law June Fisher and Delores Quam.
