Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, in rural Charles City. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Hettie Kukhan was born in Alta Vista, Iowa, June 17, 1921, the daughter of John and Nellie (Larabee) North. At the age of two, Hettie and her family moved to Deerfield, Iowa. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Colwell High School, class of 1938. She furthered her education by attending the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls for one year, but did not finish to care for her mother who was ill at that time. Hettie had been a resident of Charles City for 56 years. On Feb. 14, 1943, Hettie was united in marriage to George Kukhan in Minneapolis, Minn. The couple started their married life on a farm at rural Ionia. Hettie worked at the old Oliver plant in Charles City. In 1947 they moved to Charles City where their son, Arlyn was born.

She worked at Girards Floral for 10 years and later started her own flower shop in the basement of the family's home, which she owned and operated for 29 years. Hettie's greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Wa-tan-ye Club, V.F.W. Auxiliary, Women of the Moose and White Farm Friendly Club. Hettie's interests included her love for telling stories, dancing, playing cards, attending the semi-annual Spring and Fall Waverly Horse Sales and Charles City girl's softball games. Hettie was an avid "Chicago Cubs" baseball fan. Hettie will be fondly remembered by family and friends who shared in her life.

Those grateful for having had the privilege in sharing in her life are her son, Arlyn (Shirley) Kukhan of Charles City; three grandchildren: Heidi (Brian) Young of Charles City; Holly (Tony) Fisher of Biloxi, Miss., and Ty (Laura) Kukhan of Charles City; four great-grandchildren: Jordan and Jacob Feltz and Tyler and Trey Fisher; one sister, Mildred Boggess of Charles City. Hettie was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1993; one sister, Iva Strickler, and two brothers, Glenn and Gale North and her parents.
