NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Royden M. Severson, 77, of 512 First St. S.W. in Nora Springs, died Friday (June 20, 2003) at Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen, officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs, where full military honors will be conducted by members of H.D.S. American Legion Post # 449, Nora Springs.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City and one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Royden M. Severson Memorial Fund.
Roy was born Aug. 15, 1925, at Scarville, the son of Anton and Gertie (Johnson) Severson. He was a 1943 graduate of Scarville High School, Scarville. Roy served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, until his discharge in the fall of 1946.
On Aug. 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Lois Larson at Ossian Lutheran Church, Ossian. He later attended Luther College at Decorah, graduating in 1949.
After a number of years in retail management, Roy and Lois owned and operated The Family Bowling Center in Mason City rom 1958 to 1973. In 1975 they owned and operated the Stardust Lanes, in Nora Springs, until 1983. Roy also built Nordic Lanes, in Northwood, in 1977.
After retiring, they made their home in Sun City West, Ariz., until March of 2003 when Roy became ill. Roy enjoyed all sports, especially bowling and golf. He was an avid Cubs and Diamondbacks fan.
In 1983 he was inducted into the Mason City Bowling Association Hall of Fame.He is survived by his wife, Lois (Larson) Severson, of Nora Springs; four sons, Charles Severson and special friend, Karen Anderson, of Peoria, Ariz.; Jim Severson and his wife, Cheryl, of Nora Springs; Mark Severson and his wife, Mariam, of New Concord, Ohio; Tim Severson and his wife, Lori, of Ankeny; grandchildren, Travis Severson, Jana Severson, Adam Severson, Abbey Cox and her husband, David, Audrey Severson, Amanda Severson, A. Mark Severson, Ashley Severson, Katlin Severson, and Connor Severson; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Don Severson, of Marshalltown; a sister, SeDell Ofestadal, of Grand Meadow, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Biford, Noble, and Stanley; a sister, Gladys Johnson; and a great-grandchild, Surrender Peace Cox.
