CHARLES R. SCHULZ

ROCKFORD - Charles R. Schulz, 87, of Glendale, Ariz., passed away Friday (August 15, 2003). He was born in Mound City, Kansas, and graduated in 1933 from Pomeroy High School.

In 1940, while working for the R.E.A., Charles traveled to Rockford, Iowa, where, after a whirlwind romance, he met and married his wife, Lois A. Laudner, of Rockford, Iowa. They were married in Sumner, Iowa, on December 10, 1940, and were together for over 61 years before Lois passed away in 2002.

Charles and Lois had four children, Charles Jr. and his wife, Denise, of Carefree, Ariz., Susan and her husband, David Ransom, of Phoenix, Ariz., Michael and his wife, Judy, of Huber Heights, Ohio and Jack of North Ridgeville, Ohio, all of whom survive their parents. Charles and Lois have six grandchildren, Charles III, Jeremy, Michele, Jennifer, Amy and Julie; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Charles was an electrician with the R.E.A. until he entered the United States Army in 1942 where he served honorably in North Africa and Italy. After the war, Charles worked for several companies before retiring in 1982 from his position as a Utilities Engineer for Texaco Chemicals in Port Neches, Texas.

After retiring, Charles and Lois moved to Glendale, Ariz., where Charles could pursue his second avocation, golf. He played golf three days a week until shortly after his 85th birthday. He also became an active volunteer with SCORE, Seniors Helping Seniors and joined the Glendale, Ariz., Kiwanis where he became a leader at the local, state and regional levels.

In his spare time he continued the craft of tatting he had learned from his mother. Over the years, Charles completed numerous tablecloths, runners, doilies and even an American Flag. We will all miss him.

A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford. Charles will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford, next to his dear wife, Lois. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to make memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower, Phoenix, AZ, 85014.
