Mabel was born one of two children to John and Florence "Van Iperen" Markus at Otley, Iowa on April 14, 1907. She graduated from Iowa Falls High School and then moved to Gary, Indiana, in 1928. She met George Frederich Otto and after a whirlwind courtship of around a week, married him on June 30, 1930 in Gary. Later that year they moved to Rockford, where she has been a resident ever since. To this union was born one son. She worked for several area doctors in the office and then trained in nursing. She was then employed at Park Hospital and then worked in the home. She was excellent at embroidery, knitting and crocheting. She sold some of her Afghans but gave most of them to family and friends. She enjoyed making doll clothes for her granddaughter. She was very active at Zion Lutheran and the Senior Citizens. Later in life she enjoyed taking bus tours around the United States and she visited every continental state. She enjoyed going with friends to dinner theaters.

Those thankful in sharing Mabel's life include her daughter-in-law Phyllis (Otto) Hillis, Charles City; one granddaughter Teresa S. Otto, St. Peter, Minn.; and one grandson, Jeffrey L. and his wife Lori Otto, Island Lake, Ill.

Her parents, her husband George in Nov. 1972, her son Jerald J. "Jerry" Otto in June 1985 and her sister, Tunnetta Day, preceded her in death.

The Fullerton Funeral Home and Cremation Services is in charge of the arrangements.
