William "Bill" Schwartz, 78, a resident of 1134 Shadow Avenue, Charles City, died Friday, February 14, 2003, at his residence.

Memorial services for Bill Schwartz will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Final disposition will be at a later date.

There will be a gathering of family and friends at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Friday.

William Charles Schwartz was born April 23, 1924, at Fulton, IL, the son of Fredrick and Mildred (Gusse) Schwartz. He graduated from the Clinton High School.

In 1954 Bill was married to Fern French. They were married for 24 years. In 1955 Bill purchased a farm north of Charles City. He retired from farming in 1986 and continued living there until his death. Bill's interests included fishing, and playing pool and cards. His grandchildren were very important to Bill and brought special joy to him.

Living family members include his daughter, Claudia (Rick) Montgomery of Plainfield; two granddaughters, Wendy (Doug) Ross, and Angela King; three great grandchildren; three brothers, Donald (Roberta) Schwartz and Wesley (Emma) Schwartz both of Clinton, and Fredrick Schwartz of Bryant; and five sisters, Dorothy Peters of Arkansas, Eunice (Ed) Violett of DeWitt, Helen Darr of Front Royal, Va., Edna Mae (Tom) Montague of DeWitt, and Alma (Sam) Funaro of Des Moines. His parents, a granddaughter, Michele Hoisington, a brother, Kenneth Schwartz, and a sister, Elnora Schwartz, preceded him in death.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society.
