Larry DeVries, 57, a resident of 402 4th Avenue, Charles City, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at his home.

Funeral services for Larry DeVries will be held today, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation was at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday , Feb. 17, 2003 and from 9 a.m. until service time on Tuesday, Feb 18, 2003.

Larry Allen DeVries was born October 25, 1945, at Charles City, the son of Hommo "Onnie" and Minnie (Rand) DeVries. He grew up in the Elma area and attended Crestwood High School.

On April 18, 1964, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Conway at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. Larry worked at BC Hydrotile in Nashua for twenty-five years, Featherlite Trailers, and David Manufacturing. He could be found spending time playing pool, working in his garage, gambling and watching NASCAR racing. However, his passion was stock car racing. During his 30 years of racing he built his own racecars, and was well known and respected in north Iowa for his talents and abilities. In 1987 he won the Season Championship at the I 35 Speedway in Mason City, in 1995 he was all time season points champion at the Fayette County Speedway, and also at the same time received the fans Most Popular Driver Award. Larry also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife: Cheryl of Charles City; four children: Rick DeVries of Floyd, David (Roni) DeVries of Clear Lake, Brian (Gina) DeVries of Charles City, and Minessa (Randy) Wiltse of Charles City; seven grandchildren: Kyle DeVries, Kayla Byers, Ashley Wiltse, Shane Wiltse, Tyler Wiltse, Tanner Putney, and Brianne DeVries; a brother: Darrell (Connie) DeVries of Charles City; and three sisters: Lorilee (Marv) Ackerson of Bassett, Wanda (Dennis) Meyer of Elma, and twin sister Lynda (Bob) Chambers of Elma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister: Darlys Jacobson, and nephew: David Lee DeVries.

Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City is in charge of arrangements.
