William Cross, 82, a resident of 302 8th Avenue, Charles City, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, Iowa.

Funeral services for William Cross will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Kenneth Kent, pastor of the Rockford United Methodist Church, and Rev. Paul Wilcox, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, will officiate.

Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003 and from 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.

William August Cross was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Floyd County, the son of Robert and Laura (Strus) Cross. He received his education from the Floyd High School. On Feb. 28, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lois Clapp at Austin, Minn. William served in the United States Army during World War II. William and Lois are long time residents of Charles City but did live a number of years in California. During his working career William was employed at the Oliver Corporation, but spent most of his time working as an auto mechanic, retiring in 1977.

He was a member of the Rockford United Methodist Church, V.F.W., Trailblazers, which was the unit that he served with in the Rhineland Campaign, and a former member of the I.A.M. Local 1596. Talking about cars, woodworking, gardening, and doing yardwork were some of William's favorite pastimes.

Living family members include his wife, Lois of Charles City, four sons, Danny (Colleen) Cross of Grand Terrace, Calif.; Jerry (Dawn) Cross of Shasta Lake, Calif., Craig Cross of Cotati, Calif., and Robert (Mae) Cross of Charles City; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; a sister, Marcella (Harold) Carlson of Rockford; and two brothers, Roland Cross of Charles City, and Larry (Sharon) Cross of Nora Springs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Paul Cross, and a grandson, John Cross.

Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City is in charge of arrangements.
