BASSETT, IOWA - Silas Johnson, 79, a resident of 201 South Main, Bassett, died, Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at his home. Funeral services for Silas Johnson were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiated. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery. Military honors were conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Silas B. Johnson was born Nov. 24, 1922, at Waucoma, the son of A. W. and Kathryn (Farrell) Johnson. He graduated from Waucoma High School in 1940. Silas served his country in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal. On May 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Aili Maenpaa at Stambaugh, MI. They moved to the Charles City area in 1949. Silas worked as a pipe fitter for Salsbury Laboratories for over thirty years. He attended Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a member of the V.F.W. Silas enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and playing cribbage.

Living family members include his wife, Aili of Bassett; two sons, Michael Johnson of Madisonville, Tenn., and Gerald Johnson and wife Carol of Bassett; a daughter, Diane Takalo of Hillsboro, Ore.; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Floyd of Wichita, Kan., and two special family members, Brandon and Melissa Vermillion of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and five sisters.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa Charles City site and St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City is in charge of arrangements.
