Vera Helen Ella Engelhardt, 87, formerly of 913 Beck St., Charles City, Iowa., died Thursday May 23, 2002, at Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday May 28, 2002, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 705 3rd Ave., Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be held in Lime Springs Cemetery, Lime Springs, Iowa, at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation was held from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday May 27, 2002, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Vera was born July 19, 1914, the daughter of Richard and Anna (Reinhardt) Martens in rural Howard Co.

On August 20, 1932, Vera was united in marriage to Abner John Engelhardt in Preston, Minnesota. To this union nine children were born. Vera worked hard along side her husband on the farm for many years as they raised their children.

Vera loved reading the newspaper, watching and feeding the birds and squirrels, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed baking, especially Christmas cookies, and home made bread. Vera spent many hours tending to and enjoying her flower gardens. In her later years she was always ready to go for a ride.

Those thankful for having shared in Vera's life include her children: Darryl Engelhardt and his wife Lois of Garrison, Iowa, Vicky Davies and her husband, Owen, of Charles City, Nancy Howland and her husband, Steve, of Davenport, Iowa, Joanie Lukes and her husband, John, of Washburn, Iowa; and Debra Foster and her husband, Don, of Greene, Iowa; 25 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Engelhardt was preceded in death by her parents, husband Abner, two sons, Arlyn and Jerry Engelhardt Sr., two daughters, Judith Harrington, and infant daughter Peggy Engelhardt, two brothers, and two sisters.
