HANOVER, Ind. - Charlotte M. Smith, 96, of 318 E. First Street, Madison, Ind., formerly of Charles City, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Hanover Nursing Center in Hanover, Ind.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at the Sunnyside Chapel, rural Charles City with the Rev. Eugene Reynolds officiating. Interment wil be at Sunnyside Memorial Gardens in Charles City.

A memorial service was conducted by the La-Belle Reviere Rebakah Lodge No. 624 Monday night at the funeral home.

Charlotte was born Nov. 9, 1905, in Louisa, the daughter of Jacob Emery Reynolds and Laura Elizabeth (Carson) Reynolds. She was a retired school teacher who taught grades one through eight in a one room country school house in Iowa for 20 years. She was a special education teacher for the Floyd County School System for several years and also served as a substitute teacher in the Madison Consolidated School System for nine years. She was a life member of the Iowa State Teacher Association and the National Education Association; the La-Belle Reviere Rebakah Lodge No. 624 Madison, Ind.; the Ladies of the Patriarch Militant and St. John's United Church of Christ.

Living family members include a son, Darryl Smith of Madison, Ind., a granddaughter, Donna Hallgarth of Lexington, Ind. and a sister, Verlee DeVries of Aplington, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Verna Sondo, Amanda Smith and Gertrude Schnurstein, three brothers, Leonard, Lester and Austin Reynolds and a granddaughter, Deborah Ann Smith.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to St. John's United Church of Christ.
