NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Donald Dean Yount, 72, of Nora Springs, died Saturday, (May 25, 2002) at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the Nora Springs United Methodist Church, 202 N. Hawkeye, with the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating. Interment will follow at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, where military honors will be conducted by the H.D.S. American Legion Post #449 of Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, where a Rock Sirius Masonic Lodge service will also be held at 6 p.m. Visitation will also continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Memorials may be directed to the Nora Springs United Methodist Church.

Don was born March 16, 1930, in Ackley, Iowa, the son of Charles and Helen (Shugar) Yount. When he was five, he moved with his parents to McGregor, Iowa, where his father was manager of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 32 years and also built and managed Yount's Motel. Don graduated from McGregor High School in 1947 and from Luther College in Decorah in 1958. During the years between high school and college graduation, Don worked at various jobs, became a patrolman, and married Margie Christine Meyer of McGregor on Nov. 18, 1951.

He served in the Korean War for 13 months, during which time he was with the 443rd Quartermaster Base Depot Headquarters in Seoul, as a securities investigating officer. He received a commendation for his service. After his discharge, he returned to Luther College and earned a B.A. degree in Education. He spent two years teaching in Blooming Prairie, Minn., until he and his family moved to Nora Springs, where he taught science at Nora Springs High School and coached various sports until retiring in 1991. He also became a renowned sports official in basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball during that time. Don did post-graduate work in science at Western Michigan University, University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Iowa.

Don was a member of the H.D.S. American Legion Post #449 in Nora Springs, the Rock-Sirius Masonic Lodge #294 in Nora Springs, and was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite member. He enjoyed golf, motor home trips, was an avid sports fan, and also enjoyed watching his grandchildren, as well as the youth of the Nora Springs area, participate in their musical and sporting events.

Don is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margie, of Nora Springs; two daughters, Christie Ann Haacke and her husband, Warren, of Riceville, and Patty Lynn Yount, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Elisa and Adam Haacke, of Riceville; two step-grandchildren, Michelle Berentsen, her husband, Kent, and his daughter, Paige, all of Riceville, and Ryan Haacke and his special friend, Michelle Bauer, of Des Moines; two step-great-grandchildren, Brittany and Amanda Eggerichs, of Riceville; two uncles, William A. Shugar and his wife, Dorothy, of Ackley, and Ray Teske, of Fredericksburg, Va.; a brother, Charles Yount, of Jackson, Miss., and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two aunts.
