Thelma Nockels, 88, of Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa, died Friday, July 4, 2008, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Thelma Marlys Jahr Nockels was born November 16, 1919, at Lyle, Mower county, Minnesota, the daughter of George and Emma (Olson) Jahr. She graduated from the Lyle High School.

On February 5, 1940, she was united in marriage to Joseph Nockels at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton. They owned and operated a shoe store in Hampton, moving to Charles City in 1945. Joseph, her beloved husband, died on September 22, 1981.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she always looked forward to attending Mass, and Saint Joseph’s Circle. Thelma also had volunteered at Riverside Chautauqua. Her interests included dancing and cooking. She will always be remembered for her homemade noodle soup and pies. Thelma’s greatest interest, however, was her family and she took special interest in all of their lives.

Living family members include five children, Frank (Marlys) Nockels of Arvada, Colorado, Jerome “Jerry” Nockels of Castle Rock, Colorado, Richard “Rick” Nockels of Denver, Colorado, Joanne (David) Wiltse of Charles City, and Michael (Denise) Nockels of Highlands Ranch, Colo; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a brother, Vernon “Curley” (Dorothy) Jahr of Long Beach, Calif., and a sister Ione Huff of Helena, Mont.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and five brothers.
