Evelyn M. Sturdivant, 91, of Charles City, died Monday, September 11 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital. She was born on January 23, 1915 in Mitchell County to parents Thomas and Juanita Hughes, Sr. and graduated from Colwell High School in 1933.

Evelyn was united in marriage to Paul E. Sturdivant at the Little Brown Church during the 1936 blizzard. They farmed for over 35 years in the Colwell area, raising chickens, pigs, sheep, milk cows and even chinchillas. Evelyn also worked as a cook for the Charles City Schools in the late 60’s and 70’s. In 1977 Evelyn and Paul moved to Charles City.

Evelyn was an active member of the Colwell United Church of Christ and its Women’s Fellowship; she also belonged to the Floyd County Historical Society and Friends of the Library. She enjoyed flowers, and was a voracious reader.

Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Beth Shahan and Anne Sturdivant (Gary), a brother Robert (Wilma) Hughes, a sister Bernita Chestek, Mesa, AZ, sister-in-law Unis Hughes, brothers-in-law Laverne Byers, Donald (Tracy) Sturdivant, Rockaway Beach, MO and Bud Lomison, granddaughters Leah (Dave) Diercks, Jeanette, Rachel and Sarah Shahan, two great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, brother Thomas Hughes, Jr., sister Geneva Byers, sisters-in-law Helen Chestek and Maxine Lomison, and son-in-law Tom Shahan.
